Talk to any full time commercially employed stylist and they will tell you that fashion styling is hard work! Everyone wears clothing and makes decisions about which combination of items they put on in the morning, but what qualifies someone as a professional?
Westfield Garden City has recently launched an initiative that accurately introduces fashion students to the real world of fashion styling in a refreshingly grass roots and down to earth way. In the last six weeks, Fashion students from Mount Gravatt Institute of Tafe (MSIT) have been put through their paces in an effort to become “The Stylist’s Apprentice”.
Three finalists will battle it out in the MSIT studios this week, the winner receiving a paid position as assistant to Westfield Garden Stylist Sara Hatten-Masterson. Each finalist will only have two hours to trawl through the myriad of retail outlets at Westfield Garden City and collect the items they need for their shoot. They must brief their make-up artist, hair stylist and work with their photographer to get what they need. Then, armed with a professional photographer and model they will each have two hours studio time to complete a five shot look book in line with a specified A/W trend.
With this trailblazing initiative, Westfield Garden City is set to introduce students to the real face of the fashion industry. Emerging jobs in fashion styling are making trade based jobs more viable for female students – a wonderful new skill based career option for hard working style savvy women.
The winner will be announced at a stylish finale event at Enoteca restaurant in South Brisbane. Prominent fashion editors and designers are set to attend to witness the crowning of Brisbane’s latest up and comer!
