While I’m the last person to deny a fellow being of couture, I did wonder just how natural it was for chuck to be roaming the streets in a designer trench. I soon discovered after visiting some busy doggie hot spots that my friend and her soon to be fabulous fur-baby were not the only ones searching for that perfect canine ensemble.
Doggie style has taken the world by storm with several couture designers popping up in New York and Europe. Romy& Jacob, Fetchers & Fighters and Oscar Newman Pet Couture are just a few of the emerging pet labels catering for canine looks from chic to street.
Then there is Pet Fashion Week. Taking place in August this year in NYC, an annual event that raises money for Animal welfare charities. Couture clad pups lead by supermodels strut their four-legged stuff on the ironically named ‘catwalk’. This celebration of doggy style is crossing borders with pet fashion parades and events now scheduled in several parts of Europe.
And these posing pooches are not without representation. The need for pet models has given birth to several talent agencies targeted at talent scouts looking for the right aesthetic fit.
Should we grow tired of the next generation of human supermodels at least we have back up… of an even ‘bitchier’ variety. Watch this space. It may just be that the next A-list fashion pack to hit the streets of NY and LA are an entirely different breed.
