I love almost everything about winter in Brisbane, from the fashion to hot water bottles and nights cozied up by the fire. The only thing that has ever held me back from embracing this time of year with open arms is that weekends can seem a little more boring when you don’t have the option of going to the beach, BBQs in the park and lunching outdoors.
This season however, I made it my mission to discover the very best things to do on a winter weekend in Brisbane. For those of you who, like me, have suffered from the chills of winter-itis, I have come up with a few ideas to get you out of hibernation and embracing all things great about the season.
1. Go on a mini trip for a day
When you live somewhere, it is easy to forget about your surroundings. Within a short distance from Brisbane, there are lots of places to venture out to for a lovely day out. Why not take a flask up to the scenic rim of Mt Barney or venture to Mt Tamborine or Sirromet. While you are there – why not make the most of it and stay the weekend?
2. Go vintage shopping
Winter accessories are fabulous, but can sometimes be difficult to justify with only three cold months of the year. With an abundance of vintage treasure troves around Brisbane, why not spend an afternoon hunting for a one-off bargain? If you have time I suggest trekking it to Ipswich – the quality of their op shops is unsurpassed.
3. Enjoy winter breakfasts
On a cold winter morning, there is sometimes nothing more satisfying than treating yourself to a hearty breakfast at one of Brisbane’s cozy cafes. My personal favourites are Campos in Fortitude Valley, The Gunshop Café in West End and The Little Larder in New Farm but for those who like a quirky menu you can’t go past Salt in Rosalie.
4. Bikram Yoga
Take a break from outdoors exercise and try something different, like Bikram Yoga. This 90 minute intensive form of yoga undertaken in a heated room is the perfect way to get your heart racing, while staying warm at the same time. Aside from being fantastic for weight loss, fitness and flexibility, Bikram is the perfect way to fight off the winter flu and stay healthy.
5. Learn to cook
Whether you are a culinary master or a beginner like me, taking a winter cooking class is the perfect way to perfect those hard-to-get recipes. James St Cooking School runs several classes a week with everything from Northern Thai to Curries of the World although at the moment I’ve got my eye on Winter Pastries – delish!
