When I first interviewed for the position of a PR Intern in The Red Republic’s Sydney office, I was posed the questioned “Why PR?” Looking back I realised, I didn’t actually know. Sure, it sounded like a cool industry with lots of exciting parties, but to be honest it’s so much more than that. Not to mention so much better!

Here’s my PR love letter, with just 10 of the innumerable reasons PR is, in this humble opinion, one of the most exciting industries to work in!

  1. It’s never boring.

Let’s face it, PRs are generally pretty energetic. A good thing when you’re working on 5 different campaigns, in 5 very different industries, all at once. But who wants boring anyway?

  1. You become part of your client’s team as well as your own.

Here at The Red Republic, I’m fortunate enough to not only be part of one incredible PR team, but I also have a true role in each of my client’s companies. Whilst I may not be a direct employee, we work together in a collaboration, share ideas and support each other in the same way you would a colleague.

  1. Wildly intelligent, creative and passionate team members.

I am constantly in awe of the talent in this industry. PRs are creative and driven. They are thought leaders and problem solvers. And they usually do it in heels.

  1. The changing landscape.

PR is no longer just about securing traditional publicity. Thanks to the rise of the Internet and the changing media landscape, PR now encompasses so much more. It’s about finding the many ways a brand can reach its audience, as well as shaping the message to gain cut through.

  1. Fashion isn’t the be all and end all – but it sure helps to look fabulous.

As with any profession, the way you present yourself to the world is the way in which the world is going to judge you. How can a client trust you to make their brand look good if you can’t turn up to work looking polished? Besides, let’s face it, dressing up is fun!

  1. You learn the power of a well-worded email.

Because poor grammar deserves an ‘unfollow’.

  1. That elated feeling you get when you get a particularly amazing piece of coverage.

  1. You become a networking pro.

Sometimes you even do it without meaning to.

  1. The many, many hats.

By that I don’t mean literal hats, I mean different roles you get to use all in one day. The event manager, the strategist, the social media gun, the journalist…  I love that I can go from writing a dense fiscal report to planning a large scale fashion launch all within an hour.

  1. Making cool things happen.

PR is the perfect combination or creativity and meticulousness. And when you combine big ideas with hard work, the results can take your breath away.
